Windows 10 20H2 is the tenth major release that Microsoft is releasing (since the original release) for desktops and laptops, and it’s a small update to supplement the May 2020 Update. (You can learn more about this update in this field guide.)
Windows 10 20H2 release date
The October 2020 Update available starting October 20, 2020, and the company is pushing it to devices gradually starting with devices known to have a good upgrade experience first, and then after collecting feedback and telemetry the rollout will expand more broadly. Similar to previous releases, the installation process will be different depending on the version installed on your device. If you’re already running Windows 10 version 2004, then because this version and the October 2020 Update share the same core file system, the new version will be available as an optional cumulative update through Windows Update, and the installation will only take a few minutes. On the other hand, if the computer has an older version, such as the November 2019 Update, then the upgrade process will require reinstallation, and the entire process could take some time. Microsoft is also making available the Media Creation Tool and Update Assistant, but it’s recommended to wait until you receive the notification through Windows Update to make sure that your device is compatible. If you use either tool to upgrade version 2004, then the process will require full reinstallation.
Windows 10 20H2 new features
The Windows 10 20H2 doesn’t include significant new features, but you’ll find a lot of fixes, internal improvements, and some visual updates. For instance, this update introduces a new Start menu design that blends in much better with the system theme colors. When creating a new account with a Microsoft account, you’ll now get a more personalized taskbar experience. The Chromium version of Microsoft Edge now comes built-in the operating system, there are some improvements for the Settings app, and much more.
